University of Zadar: The predecessor of what today is the University of Zadar was established in 1396, as a studium generale of the Dominican order. In the year 1553 it was granted the status of universitas privilegiata. In 1956, a modern Faculty of Philosophy was established which initially functioned as a part of the University of Zagreb and after 1974 of the University of Split. The University of Zadar was re-established in 2003, as a department-based institution fully integrated in accordance with the requirements of the Bologna-process. The university consists of 22 departments, mostly in the humanities and social sciences. There are currently 5.000 students enrolled in 60 undergraduate and postgraduate study programmes.
Department of Sociology, University of Zadar, Croatia was founded in 1976 as part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zadar and was recognised for its research activity in the field of sociology of religion and sociology of ethnicity. Since 2003 the Department of Sociology has been a unit within the integrated University of Zadar (firstly founded in 1396). Main research areas in the Department include: identity, mobility and new technologies; intercultural approaches to ethnic diversity and identity; transnational migration; challenges of Europeanisation, national and European identities; quality and social inclusion in higher education. Department of Sociology in Zadar particularly developed curricula in cultural sociology (International Joint MA in Cultural Sociology together with Universities in Graz, Trento and Brno since 2012), sociology of regional and local development (International Joint PhD in Sociology of Regional and local development, together with University of Teramo since 2011) and its other programmes’ courses give strong emphasis on ethnic relations, media and social identities.
